The place is here.. The time is now
As I jumped out of the surf this morning, I was inspired to get home and write my first official post. The thing with progress, is it doesn’t quite manifest unless you bite the bullet and get shit done. I’m really excited to kick things off on here, and see where this journey leads.
As you may or may not know, I’m an Occupational Therapist, among other things, working in the field of mental health, and I’m super passionate about raising the profile of mental health on a global scale. There is so much scope for improvement in the current mental health arena, and I’m determined to maintain a disruptive approach to awareness, treatment and support of mental health issues.
I’m determined to maintain a disruptive approach..
I’ve been involved in the growth, development and running of the mental health and surfing organisation OneWave for the last 3 years now. This is a role I am inspired to continue to flourish, however this website will encapsulate a more generalised and widespread approach to the mental health and NFP world.

This website will continually evolve with topical discussions, ‘How To’ guides, and resources for people to navigate the mental health realm. It will also explore the ins and outs of the ‘Not-For-Profit’ world, comparing and contrasting this to ‘For-Purpose’ and ‘Social Change’ enterprises. I’ve learnt many valuable lessons in these spaces over the past years, hence I’m inspired to share my unique perspective, and provide insight into creative ways to approach this growing global issue they call ‘mental illness’. I for one, don’t like this term illness, as it depicts a negative connotation, but let’s leave that one for exploration in a future blog post.
Stay tuned for some exciting things coming up, including the establishment of a Podcast! I won’t be posting too regularly initially, but check back in to see that increase as the year goes on. For now, i’ll leave you with one of my favourite quotes from Francis of Assisi –
Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
Keep being awesome,
Joel
